My Favorite (207!) Movies

My Favorite Movies

I often get asked what my favorite movies are.  I’ve seen lots of movies, maybe 5,000 or so, but I cannot compare with real film critics like the late Roger Ebert.  The films available to him far outstrip those I have handy access to.  Nevertheless, below is the list I put on the back of the syllabus for my new Film Studies class.  I’m sure I missed a couple…

Also let me caution that these are favorite movies and not what I consider the best movies ever made.  For example, Citizen Kane is considered by most knowledgeable about film technique and history to be the greatest film ever made.  I’ve seen it. I marvel at its technical brilliance considering the equipment available to director Orson Welles.  That said it’s not a film I need to see again anytime soon.  It just doesn’t interest me.  This brings me to my Axiom #1: Just because it’s good doesn’t mean you have to like it.  Just because you like it doesn’t mean it’s good.

Appreciation for technical mastery and personal taste are two different things.  I personally can’t stand most jazz, but the technical mastery of someone like Miles Davis is undeniable.  However, I can’t hack more than a few minutes of his very highly regarded album Bitches Brew.  It simply doesn’t suit my taste in music.

So after all that here’s my list(in no particular order).
